Coca Cola Chicken

This Coca Cola Chicken was cooked sometime after the Chinese New Year when there were many cans of carbonated drinks left over.  Since I don't drink much of carbonated drinks, I used it to cook this popular chicken dish upon request of the young gal at home.
I should have used the Coca Cola to cook this dish during Chinese New Year cos' it was really easy yet the outcome was very satisfactory.  Yummy-licious dish using chicken wings or chicken thighs [preferably with some skin on].
Ingredients
3 chicken thighs - cut bite size pieces or 6 chicken wings
1-2 tbsp light soy sauce to taste
1-2 tsp dark soy sauce
2-3 cloves garlic - peeled and bruised [optional - I omit]
1 can regular Coca Cola
1 tsp sesame oil [optional- I omit]

  1. Marinate the chicken thighs with some salt and sesame oil for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat up a non-stick pan, pan fry the chicken pieces until slightly brown.
  3. Add light soy sauce, dark soy sauce and pour in the Coke. Add garlic if using.
  4. Bring to boil, and taste to adjust seasoning. Lower heat to simmer for 20 minutes or until sauce is thick and chicken is cooked through.
  5. Stir once in awhile to ensure the chicken pieces are well coated with the braising sauce.
  6. Dish up to serve.

Isn't this an easy way to cook chicken? Yet so tasty with rice.

Hi Kimmy, I've heard about Coca Cola chicken/spare ribs for a long time but haven't have the courage to cook it. I wondered how it would taste like. Looking at your chicken now, made me want to cook. But too bad I don't have coke at home. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kimmy, oh yes I've cooked Coca Cola chicken wings a few times ... very tasty. Seeing yours, making me drool over your plate of Coca Cola Chicken!

Hi Veronica, yes there are many versions of Coca Cola Chicken [drumsticks, wings, spare ribs]. Seen a friend cooking it in a rice cooker. Some have watery sauce but I prefer the sauce to be thick and coating the meat pieces. You may need to add more water if cooking spare ribs. The chicken tasted savoury sweet.

Hi Karen, I wanted to cook it with chicken wings too but drop the idea cos' I was afraid the gravy may be too oily. But, I will be using chicken wings to cook this dish again for the young ones in the family. Thinking of it makes me drool too. Still have several cans of Coke at home.

Hi Kimmy,
My kids at home love this too. Love the sweet and savory taste. It is a finger- licking good dish and it's such a great way to use up the left over carbonated drinks :)
Thanks for sharing this to LTU!

Hi Kimmy I have never dared to cook this because I worry that the taste of the coke will be too strong for me. It looks really good though..

Hi Diana, the cola taste is not intense after cooking. You won't be able to detect it.

Kimmy, I thought I commented earlier. Must be my memory going cuckoo or blogger made my comment disappear hah..hah... Anyway, I have heard of cooking with coca cola but somehow never dared to try because it might turn put weird. But looking at your coca cola chicken, my fears are unfounded!

Hi Phong Hong, you did? I don't remember seeing it but no problem at all. Frankly speaking, I regretted cooking this portion when the young girl in the house requested for more and my hubby had to surrender his share for her sake. She asked to cook it again cos' it's really good. Not weird at all.

Hi HHB, very happy that you prepared this dish and well received by your family. I wanted to cook this again with some cans of Cola in the fridge but they went missing soon....you know what happened???? someone in the house has used it to quench their thirst. I supposed.
